MusingsAn X fanfiction by Ariane Kovacevic, AKA Fuu-chan. A strong wind is blowing, chasing the angry clouds away. Sunlight... A rainbow... Pretty, perhaps. I lean back against one of the pillars supporting the structure of the new skyscraper, letting my eyes wander over the city. It has grown so much... People in the streets, so many of them... Cars... Men and women walk side by side, ignoring each other, as if they were the only living beings haunting the place. They walk, on and on, never stopping. Why ? I smile, watching them. They are so tiny... So faraway... How like them we are. Am I the only one who realises it ? Am I the only one who can detach himself enough to see it ? Detached... Oh I am that, and in truth all these thoughts are nothing but idle wondering, a way of passing the time until we can at last settle this matter. I do not care in the least for all this, for all of them. They are nothing, but waiting can become boring and indulging in philosophy can be amusing... If I take a stone and drop it from this building, it will fall down to the ground. Funny, that is exactly how we are behaving, like stones dropped from a cliff. We fall, always in the same direction. But not always in the same sense... That is when we collide. Like arrows aimed at each other... We see and yet we are blind. We keep on going forward, as if this was inescapable. Destiny... Stupid. No matter how alike to every single thing we are, animate or inert, still we have our own abilities. We could stop... We simply won't. We keep rushing headlong towards disaster, even though it is futile. Two visions, leading to the same conclusion where we are concerned, and yet we carry on. Why ? I know I enjoy convoluted games, I enjoy watching the pawns moving on the gameboard, the unfolding of my enemy's strategy... But the others... An interesting mystery, or the result of plain and simple lack of intelligence. I wonder which... Why will they blindly follow words they have heard ? All it amounts to is nothing but words... When I look at our opposites, it is all I can do not to burst out laughing. They are so pathetic... They are gathered around a lie. He claims to deny Fate, and in so doing makes it happen. Even a child would see this, and yet he doesn't. And yet none of them do. There is no such thing as Fate, there are only people following blindly a path set for them by someone else and calling this Destiny. Fools who forge their own chains. Or perhaps... I chuckle softly as the stray thought reaches my mind. It would be so funny... Perhaps Fate is simply an expression of the law of universal gravity, after all who knows ? I shake my head and smile, looking at the ground far below. It may be they would take the time to stop and consider all this, think, but they do not dare. Because of us. They have narrowed their vision to us, they have restrained themselves to watching us, they have reduced their universe to us. An understandable mistake, but still a mistake. They assume... Yes, that might be one of the keys to the whole matter... Assuming... Aristoteles, I bow to you, o master of confusion. We owe you much... And I owe you many amusing times. How strange this picture is... Pitiful twigs that let the torrent take them away towards a deadly fall rather than to reach for the shore... This game is too complex for its players. It's a shame... But fortunately they are so out of their depths, so outclassed that sometimes they will act randomly and change the board completely, renewing the interest. She must be enjoying all this, she who set all this in motion. Or... Perhaps is she also swept away by the current, the puppet of what she thought to control ? Playing god is such an intoxicating pastime... But I doubt she could fold the gameboard now. They are trapped by their own selves, all of them. On one side those who dare not stop and consider their doubts, and on the other those who rush towards a goal that will destroy them... Some actually have a reason, others have none, content to merely follow... Sheep... I burst out laughing in the cold air of morning. The wind is still blowing, slapping me mercilessly. I look at the giant digital clock on the building in front of me and watch the seconds pass, one after another. Fascinating... Time... I could stay here for hours, days even. Musing... And if I merely untangled a little the web of shields surrounding me, I would quickly have his company. To discuss this with him could prove fun... To watch him, see anger on his face, pain, sorrow and grief mixing with what he wants so much to be hatred... The seconds keep passing. Time... Ah well, it will have to wait. I should really go rejoin those with whom my "Destiny" lies... And make the future happen. Why I bother to do this ? I thought it obvious... I have watched this game from the beginning, intervening here and there, twisting a few things to keep it as interesting as possible. I simply intend to see it to its end. But I already know one thing... There won't be a winner. It suits me, for after all what counts is not the result, but the way of obtaining it. Everyone knows that once the game is over you simply pull the plug. And then the screen turns black. End.
